The Story of Mr. Donny’s Struggle in Establishing the Fikar School
I founded the Fikar school from 2008 until now. It started with my concerns about the quality of education in Indonesia. My educational background is not from ‘Education’ and ‘Psychology’, but from the ‘Tourism’ academy, in Jakarta. The reason I entered the world of education was because of my personal experience. When I used to work abroad right in America at a Royal Caribbean cruise ship company, I saw people who came from Indonesia, even though they had graduated from college, they had to start working from the lowest level and this was because, in my opinion, Observation, Quality Education in Indonesia Even though he is a college graduate, his skills and character do not match the demands of the job.

When I look further into the past, I attended school from elementary school to high school. I experienced too much emphasis on subjects and academics that I didn’t need them for my future. It was only because it was an obligation that I had to do (and learn), that I was forced to do it JUST for the sake of a diploma.

I was never asked what my aspirations were, therefore, even though I had gotten a job, I felt the job I was doing was NOT the job I liked. I felt there was something missing in my life, I wanted to contribute but I didn’t know what to do until finally I decided to quit my job even though my salary was very large… When I worked on a cruise ship, my heart felt very empty..

Then I stopped working there and decided to become an entrepreneur, but I didn’t know what to do after I tried several fields and mostly failed, I felt a ‘call’ to enter the world of education. I feel this is because when I work, I am very close to cruise ship passengers, especially children. I love being close to them and they feel the same way. Several times the guests (passengers) of the ship wanted to adopt me as their child and their children also liked me.

I also like to provide ‘training’ to my fellow crew members while working on cruise ships because in adapting to working there, I was very patient in accompanying them until they became proficient at their work. With this experience, I finally decided to establish a different educational institution with Formal education is generally formal education that focuses only on academic education without paying attention to what a child needs. What I always want is an education that suits their talents and passions

Every child is unique, they have enormous potential if we realize it. Maybe there are some of us who work without passion, just waiting for the end of the month to get a salary. We even have a slogan: “I hate Mondays” Why? Because that’s how we feel when we start working, and that’s how I feel with my livelihood at work even though I get paid a lot (enough), I still feel empty in my heart. I thought I had to do something that would make future generations no longer feel the way I felt at that time. Even though I don’t have a background in education or psychology, I have the courage to enter the world of education. However, it is not formal education that I want to follow because my experience at school does not provide adequate qualifications. education according to the potential and skills that I have, but only pursuing a diploma… and after that, what next? Confusing!

I believe everyone has a ‘calling’ to contribute to society, but the education system in Indonesia does not accommodate this. So, they are just looking for money, and soon they will feel empty again.

How long will money satisfy us..? If this ‘chasing money’ cannot be controlled, it will cause disaster. I think we have to learn from the corruption cases that exist in our country, therefore, I dared to enter the world of education as our ‘teacher’, Stephen Covey, teaches us to focus on our circle of influence, on what we can do .

My dream is to establish a child-friendly school that focuses on developing the best potential that children have, not just a school that provides academic education but must build children’s best character. I have the belief that good and strong character/leadership will foster a child’s high self-confidence. These are good things that other people will follow, such as persistence in achieving their future, having a good attitude, having good spirituality (not just a mere ritual but can become part of his character and identity)

This educational approach is what I really want. and I personally send my children to this school ~ the school we manage. I want to see him grow with strong character and leadership, because we realize that good character must exist. formed as early as possible until it becomes an ingrained habit. It will be difficult if character formation begins after they are adults because they already have an identity that has been formed for a long time, and if they want to change, they have to go through a very difficult struggle like the story of my life.

Here are some useful quotes:

  • When we sow our thoughts, we will form actions.
  • When we sow our actions, we will form habits.
  • When we sow our habits, we shape our destiny.

So, now the question is: “Where do we take education for our children?”
Education is the beginning for the formation of our children’s minds.
Is it in accordance with the best potential that our children have, or is it ‘killing’ their potential?
